Nicholas Wolterstorff

Nicholas Wolterstorff (s. 21. tammikuuta 1932, Bigelow, Minnesota) on yhdysvaltalainen filosofi, Yalen yliopiston Noah Porter -oppituolin filosofisen teologian emeritusprofessori ja Berkeley Collegen jäsen. Wolterstorff on kirjoittanut useista filosofisista ja teologisista aiheista, ja käsitellyt erityisesti metafysiikkaa, estetiikkaa, poliittista filosofiaa, tietoteoriaa ja uskonnonfilosofiaa.

Wolterstorff oli mukana perustamassa Society of Christian Philosophers -yhdistystä ja Faith and Philosophy -julkaisua yhdessä Alvin Plantingan, William Alstonin ja Richard Mouw'n kanssa.

Oikeudenmukaisuutta koskeva tutkimus

Teoksessaan Justice: Rights and Wrongs (Princeton University Press, 2008) Wolterstorff puolustaa väitettä, jonka mukaan ehdottomia ihmisoikeuksia ei pystytä teoreettisesti oikeuttamaan ilman teististä käsitystä, jonka mukaan ihminen on luotu Jumalan kuvaksi.¹ Wolterstorffin mukaan länsimaisille sekulaareille intellektuelleille ominainen pyrkimys sulkea ihmisoikeuksien uskonnollinen perustelu keskustelun ulkopuolelle, ei tee oikeutta sen enempää käsityksen historialle kuin oikeutuksen luonteellekaan.² Historiallisesti voidaan osoittaa, että ihmisoikeuksien käsite on peräisin Raamatun maailmasta ja kanonisen lain edustajat käyttivät sitä oikeusteoriassaan jo keskiajalla. Wolterstorff vetoaa keskiajan historioitsijan Brian Tiernyn tutkimuksiin, jossa tämä osoittaa, että 1100-luvun kanonisen lain edustajat käyttivät jo ihmisoikeuksien käsitettä ³ Ihmisoikeudet perustuvat siihen, että ihmisellä on itseisarvo. Ihmisen arvo puolestaan saa oikeutuksensa siitä, että ihminen on luotu Jumalan kuvaksi.⁴
